Brownwood Park: a forest park in the city

Brownwood Park, near the East Atlanta Village, is different from the typical city parks that usually have developments such as tennis courts or baseball fields. Brownwood has been left in a fairly natural state, with trees and shrubs dotting the landscape and a loop trail running through it. Residents of the area have fought attempts to develop this wild space. This is one of the few places in the city where people can take a moment to connect with nature and see what Atlanta looks like beneath the concrete.

  1. The north end of the park IS replete with traditional sports and recreation amenities. The south end of the park, while seemingly "natural" to the uninformed, is chock-full of invasive species (kudzu, ivy, privet, tea olive, amur honeysuckle, and much more), a deeply incised/eroded stream, and bare-gullied soils. It needs a lot more hands-on management than a handful of dedicated volunteers can muster. It's truly a forested weed-patch, hardly an urban wilderness.
